After a tough opening day loss, the Portland softball team won six of their next eight games and finished third at the Commando Classic in Hendersonville out of 32 teams.
MARCH 12: MACON COUNTY 7, PORTLAND 5
Macon County’s Morgan Carter hit two home runs last Tuesday to lead the Lady Tigers to a 7-5 win over Portland.
The Lady Panthers struck first with the runs in the top of the opening frame.
Anna Herrera opened the inning with a walk. Mackenzie Hodges and Lexe Conyer both reached on errors and Herrera scored.
Scarlet Shetters sacrificed the runners to second and third and they both scored on a single by Sami Parker.
Over the next four innings Macon County scored five times to take a 5-3 lead, but the Lady Panthers tied things up in the top of the fifth.
Conyer and Mac Fitzgerald led off the inning with singles and Shetters advanced them. Parker knocked in Conyer with a ground out and then Eryn Cheney singled to bring home Fitzgerald.
Carter then hit a two-run homer run in the bottom of the sixth inning for Macon County.
Fitzgerald pitched a complete game for Portland.
MARCH 13: PORTLAND 14, SYCAMORE 2
Buoyed by an 11-run second inning, Portland crushed Sycamore 14-2 last Wednesday.
Lexe Conyer and Mac Fitzgerald led the Panthers with two hits each while Mackenzie Hodges, Scarlet Shetters, Samantha Robertson, Sami Parker, Cailey Walker and Lillie Whitehead had one hit each.
Anna Herrera and Conyer scores three runs each and Whitehead scored twice.
Shetters led the Panthers with four RBIs.
Robertson went the distance in the circle for the Panthers.
MARCH 15: PORTLAND 6, RIVERDALE 5
Portland jumped out to a five-run lead and then held off a Riverdale rally to take a 6-5 win last Wednesday.
Anna Herrera, Lexe Conyer, Mac Fitzgerald and Qierra Gregory all crossed the plate for the Lady Panthers in the first inning.
Portland added a run in the second inning when Conyer scored Lillie Whitehead with a single.
The Panthers scored their final run in the third inning when Cailey Walker singled home Eryn Cheney.
Riverdale cut the lead to one run in the bottom of the fourth inning but the Panthers closed the door at that point.
Fitzgerald pitched the entire game for the Panthers and gave up just one earned run.
MARCH 15: CLARKSVILLE 6, PORTLAND 3
Portland struggled in the field making five errors in a 6-3 loss to Clarksville on Friday.
Mac Fitzgerald opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run that also brought home Mackenzie Hodges.
Hodges scored again on a double by Lexe Conyer in the third inning.
Samantha Robertson pitched for Portland and gave up six runs, only two of which were earned.
MARCH 16: PORTLAND 1, LIVINGSTON ACADEMY 0
Mac Fitzgerald threw a one-hit shutout as Portland beat Livingston Academy, 1-0, on Saturday.
The Panthers scratched out the only run of the game in the top of the first inning when Anna Herrera singled and scored on an error.
Fitzgerald struck out four batters.
MARCH 16: PORTLAND 4, HENDERSONVILLE 3
Portland scored four runs in the first inning and that was just enough to eke out a 4-3 victory over Hendersonville on Saturday.
Anna Herrera was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the first inning and scored on a single by Lexe Conyer. Sami Parker hit a two-run double that knocked in Conyer as well as Mac Fitzgerald, who had reached on a fielder’s choice. Cailey Walker scored the final run of the inning for Portland.
Hendersonville responded with three runs in the top of the second inning to cut the deficit to one.
Panther pitchers Samantha Robertson and Mac Fitzgerald allowed just one hit the rest of the game.
MARCH 16: PORTLAND 7, STATION CAMP 2
Portland broke open a tie game in the fifth inning with five runs in a 7-2 win over Station Camp on Saturday.
The Lady Panthers opened the fifth with singles by Mac Fitzgerald and Sami Parker and then Cailey Walker walked to load the bases.
Fitzgerald and Parker scored on errors and then Walker made it home when Anna Herrera hit a single to center field. Mackenzie Hodges singled to score Daley McCloud and Lillie Whitehead with the final two runs of the inning.
Fitzgerald went all the way in the circle for the win.
MARCH 16: PORTLAND 3, WILLIAM BLOUNT 0
Cailey Walker and Mac Fitzgerald combined to one-hit William Blount in a 3-0 Portland victory.
The Panthers scored the game’s only runs in the third inning.
Fitzgerald hit a two-run single that scored Anna Herrera and Mackenzie Hodges and then Fitzgerald scored on a single by Sami Parker.
MARCH 16: DICKSON CO 9, PORTLAND 7
Dickson County scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning and defeated Portland, 9-7, on Saturday.
The Panthers outhit Dickson 10-4 but both teams made five errors.
Portland tied the game three different times in the bottom of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Mac Fitzgerald had three hits and three RBIs to lead the offense. Anna Herrera scored twice and knocked in two runs and Lillie Whitehead crossed the plate two times.
Samantha Robertson started in the circle for the Panthers and Fitzgerald pitched the last six innings, allowing just three hits and one unearned run.
