PORTLAND- The Lady Panthers struggled to get anything to go in on Friday night as they fell to Wilson Central 41-24.
“That was the best we’ve executed all year, shots just didn’t fall,” Lady Panther coach Scott Steinbrecher said. “We didn’t feel good to start and when you don’t feel good it’s harder to get shots to fall.”
The Lady Wildcats pressure defense and Portland’s 1 for 9 start from the field saw the Lady Panthers fall behind 18-3 at the end of the first quarter.
Portland (3-12, 0-6) continued to struggle from the field in the second quarter of play as they saw their deficit grow to 27-7 at the half.
Trailing 33-12 going into the final quarter of play, the Lady Panthers saw their biggest offensive output of the night in the final period behind 6 points in the quarter from Lexie Williams, but it wouldn’t be enough as Wilson Central (12-5, 3-3) finished off the 41-24 win.
Despite the loss, Steinbrecher was excited about what he saw from his team defensively, as they held Wilson Central to just 35 percent shooting from the field.
“By far the best we’ve played all year defensively,” Steinbrecher said. “Any girl we brought in played defense. I was proud them.”
Williams led Portland with 7 points, followed by Haley Dickens with 5.
The Lady Panthers will look to bounce back next with two more district matchups at home. They host Lebanon on Tuesday night at 6:30 before welcoming Gallatin on Friday night at 6.
