GALLATIN – During the third annual Main Street Awards on Tuesday morning at Gallatin Civic Center, Portland football coach Greg Cavanah took home the award for best high school coach.

“I truly consider it an honor and blessing,” Cavanah said. “I was fortunate to retire in Kentucky and came down here because Mr. Woods took a chance on me.

“We haven’t completely turned around the program yet, but the saving grace is our kids work extremely hard.”

The other two finalists with Cavanah were Pope John Paul II football coach Justin Geisinger, as well as Lady Knights head cross-county and track and field coach Kim Childress.

Cavanah is entering his sixth season with the Panthers football program and his fifth year as head coach.

Cavanah’s team will begin summer workouts in July following the TSAA dead period.

Portland will compete in three passing league’s this summer; at East Robertson July 10, vs. Westmoreland July 12 and at Greenwood July 19.
