Girls Varsity Soccer · Portland High School soccer team splits first two games

By Curtis Marlin Portland Leader

The Portland High School soccer team split its first two matches of the 2017 season last week.

On Aug. 15, the Lady Panthers fell to Merrol Hyde 6-1.

“We played a very good first half with equal possession,” coach Ryan Goostree said. “We couldn’t capitalize on our opportunities to score. Merrol Hyde ended up scoring with ten minutes left in the first half and followed that with another goal three minutes later. In the second half, we have to learn how to come back from being down and never got enough energy to make it happen.”

Lexie Williams scored the lone goal for the Purple.

Portland handed Kenwood a 4-0 setback last Thursday as Williams netted a pair of goals with Mac Craddock and Aliyah Chambers each scoring one.

“We had a rough first half,” Goostree remarked. “We had lots of scoring chances and could not put the ball in the back of the net. We had a lighting delay which slowed down our energy. We were able to bounce back in the second half and get in the back of the net. Kenwood was a physical team and we ended up losing a starter to a back injury about midway through because of their physicality. Overall, I wish I have had two, second halves rather than what we did. But, a win is a win.”
